Mixed Reactions Over Trump’s Shameful Comments

Is there anything impossible for Trump to (not think and) say?

Donald Trump is a racist. Scratch that, it’s no news. He has proven to be the president with highly irresponsible comments, tearing down the struggle for inclusivity and destroying years of efforts made to unite the world and sustain fragile peace.

As you’ve probably heard, on Wednesday, during a meeting in the Oval Office about protecting immigrants from Haiti, El Salvador, and African countries as part of a bipartisan immigration deal, the racist US president insulted an entire race. Describing African nations as shitholes and went on to single out Haiti, telling lawmakers that immigrants from that country must be removed from any deal.

“Why do we need more Haitians? Take them out.”

He also suggested that the US should instead bring more people from countries such as Norway, as well as more immigrants from Asian countries because he felt they help the United States economically.

Since then, the internet has been raging with comments from Africans, black people and in fact both local and international organisation including African Union and United Nations.

African Union said it was “frankly alarmed” by Trump’s comments, South Africa’s ruling African National Congress called the comments “extremely offensive” and United Nations says the comment is shocking and shameful.

But what more can we expect from a president who ran a racist campaign around hard stances on immigration, vowing to build a wall along the Mexican border and cut legal immigration by half, among other positions and yet was voted into power by America’s electoral college? A president who grabs women by the pussy was vocal enough to tell us and also say that all Mexicans are rapists and drug dealers. How are we surprised that he could refer to nations whose resources and ancestors made America what it is today as shithole?

The real surprises are: the White House admits he really said those things and has made no effort to correct them; some mad black people are supporting the comments and the media is acting surprised too when it’s actually their portrayal of Africa in shithole light that brought this in the first place. Now with all the shitty terms that have been used to describe Africa (‘underdeveloped’, ‘developing’, ‘desperate’, ‘poor’ and ‘starving’) why won’t Trump describe her again as a shithole?
