The Queen, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Is Going To Be At The Abantu Book Festival

The festival that celebrates black writers and readers…

And boy, are we excited to share this news. This was announced yesterday by the organizers. Adichie will be a major attraction on a list of guests that include Tsitsi Dangarembga, Helon Habila, Bibi Bakare Yusuf, Nozizwe Cynthia Jele, Fred Khumalo, Efe Paul Azino, Lola Shoneyin and Wana Udobang.

Founded by novelist Thando Mgqolozana in 2016, The Abantu Book Festival is an intervention in a white-dominated literary landscape with the mission to provide “a platform that amplifies the voices of black writers, as well as be a home for black readers.” This year’s edition is its third and will run from 6th to 9th December.

As part of the programme, Adichie is going to be in conversation with Professor Pumla Dineo Gqola. Other events will include Bibi Bakare Yusuf delivering a keynote address on the 6th, and a creative writing workshop that will feature Fred Kumalo and Kasigo Lesego Molope.

The day events of the festival are going to happen at the Eyethu Lifestyle Centre in Mofolo and entry is going to be free of charge. The night events will be at the Soweto Theatre in Jabulani, and entry tickets will cost R20. You can buy the tickets here.
